Charles Shemwell / Partner

Mr. Shemwell received his J.D. after a 10-year engineering career. His areas of technical specialization include semiconductor design, signal integrity technology, signal processing, computer architecture, and software engineering. Mr. Shemwell brings extensive experience to his practice in the areas of patent prosecution, patent licensing, technology licensing, and intellectual property counseling.

Beginning his legal career as an intellectual property attorney for Blakely Sokoloff Taylor & Zafman, Mr. Shemwell also worked as a patent licensing attorney for Rambus Inc. and in solo practice before opening Shemwell Mahamedi. He is admitted to practice in the state of California and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

As an engineer, Mr. Shemwell worked for General Electric Co., Micrometric Co., Western Technology Marketing, Inc, and Telex Computer Products, Inc. He received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida, and a J.D. from Santa Clara University.

Van Mahamedi / Partner

Mr. Mahamedi has been practicing intellectual property since 1996. His practice includes patent licensing, service agreement preparation, strategic legal counseling, opinion drafting, and assistance with litigation and patent enforcement.

Over the years, Mr. Mahamedi has focused on providing intellectual property procurement and counseling to clients at key developmental stages. Typically, the applications that Mr. Mahamedi writes are for developments that have great significance to his clients, including patent applications that cover new products, and applications that are to intended to become a core asset of newly formed companies. A sampling of the technology areas Mr. Mahamedi has covered includes wireless devices and content, streaming media, home networking, solar energy, semiconductor fabrication techniques, consumer electronics, search engines, optical sensors, high-speed connectors, and telephony devices.

Previously, Mr. Mahamedi practiced intellectual property law at Hickman Palermo Truong & Becker LLP, and at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati PC in Palo Alto. He began his career as patent counsel for Methode Electronics, Inc. in Chicago.

Mr. Mahamedi is the 2006-2007 President of San Francisco Intellectual Property Association (SFIPLA). A graduate of Boston University School of Law, Mr. Mahamedi earned his B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from U.C. Santa Barbara. Mr. Mahamedi is admitted to practice in the state of California and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

William Paradice / Partner

A patent attorney since 1993, Mr Paradice offers comprehensive legal and technical expertise to a variety of clients in Silicon Valley. His practice includes patent prosecution and procurement, patent licensing, litigation support, opinion drafting, and intellectual property counseling.

Mr Paradice received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1990. He received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Georgia School of Law, graduating Cum Laude in 1993.

He is admitted to practice law in the state of California and registered before United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Lance Kreisman / Of Counsel

Mr. Kreisman has been practicing law since 1994. His practice areas patent prosecution, IP counseling, IP due diligence, and litigation support in the following technology areas:

  • DRAM and Flash memory devices, controllers and systems
  • SerDes systems and circuitry
  • Automatic test equipment
  • Semiconductor packaging
  • Wireless communications
  • Implantable cardiac devices (ICD)

Previously, Mr. Kreisman worked as in-house patent counsel for Rambus, Inc. from 2004-2009, where he managed outside counsel patent prosecution, development, and licensing activities. Before joining Rambus, Inc., Mr. Kreisman served as Patent Counsel for Teradyne, Inc., from 1998-2004. Mr. Kreisman was also an associate attorney at Darby & Darby PC in Los Angeles and at Fulwider, Patton, Lee & Utecht in Long Beach.

Mr. Kreisman received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from University of California, Los Angeles in 1987, and received a Juris Doctor degree from Whittier Law School in 1993. Mr. Kreisman is admitted to practice law in the state of California and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Rong Liu/Patent Agent

Dr. Rong Liu is a registered Patent Agent. Her recent experience in patent prosecution includes semiconductor memory systems, consumer electronics, hybrid vehicles and battery technology, and network communication systems.

Prior to joining Shemwell Mahamedi LLP, Rong worked as an optical engineer for Agilent Technologies and Optical Associates. Previously, she worked as a scientist for Argonne National Laboratory, and was on the faculty of the physics department of Michigan State University. 

Dr. Liu received her Ph. D. in Physics from Iowa State University, and her B.S. in Physics from Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Dr. Liu received her Ph. D. as a CUSPEA (China-U.S. Physics Examination and Application) Scholar, one of the most prestigious scholarships available in China.

Diwei Zhang / Patent Engineer

Mr. Diwei Zhang holds a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA with Cum Laude honors.  Mr. Zhang has previously worked as a hardware engineer at Altera Corp. and Sun Microsystems, Inc, and as a field applications engineer at Teradyne Inc.
